Hello and welcome:
First and foremost, thanks so much to all of you who helped make Firefly Lane such a remarkable success this year. 2008 will definitely go down in the record books as a memorable time for me -- the launch of this new website, the publication of Firefly Lane, which was on the New York Times bestseller list for eight weeks, and of course, my surprising transition into one of those people who blog. And like it. : ) I hope you'll join in the blog conversation and find out all the news that's fit to print. I am stunned to realize how much I enjoy connecting with readers and book clubs, so please, don't be shy: chime in and hit send!
For those of you who want to read more of my work (and bless your hearts), please check out my book list and enjoy! And if you would like to get a signed copy of any of my books, please contact Liberty Bay Books in Poulsbo, Washington. For a photo of my last signing at that store, check out my blog.
For those of you visiting for the first time, let me give you a little scoop on what we're all talking about: Firefly Lane. It's a big, juicy, emotionally complex novel about two women who are friends for thirty years. It's the kind of book I love to read, with larger than life characters making difficult, wrenching decisions. These two women, who meet as girls in the glittering, disco seventies in a small town, make a pact one terrible night: best friends forever. It is a vow that holds true, creating a friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives, solid and durable, until one fateful day when a shocking betrayal rips them apart. It's a story that reaffirms the importance of friendship in our lives and reminds us all to slow down a little, to appreciate the people who have made us who we are, and to stay close to the people we love.
Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone's Farm while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac, for any woman who has ever dreamed of finding true love, or wanted a life too big to fit in an ordinary space. But mostly it's for every woman who knows what it means to stay true to your best friend, even when your heart seems to be breaking. Because what Kate and Tully say is absolutely true: careers change, men come and go, children grow up, but girlfriends are forever. If you're like me, it's a fun trip down memory lane to remember the girls and women who have mattered in your life. And judging by the mail I'm getting, there are a lot of women like us out there. Women who still remember David Cassidy and Pop Rocks and always, always make time for their best friend.
And speaking of best friends, thanks to everyone who entered The Best Friends Contest. I loved reading the stories that were shared. You all can read them here on the site. But I warn you: bring a tissue. These letters can have you laughing one minute and crying the next.
I've been fortunate recently to join a number of book clubs who are discussing my works. And what a hoot it is! I love meeting the women who read my novels…and more than a few of them seem to be living my life as well. So, if you belong to a book club, why not think about reading Firefly Lane? If my time permits, I'd love to speak to your group by phone during the discussion meeting. See details on how to get your group scheduled to talk to me. May I suggest you gather a group of friends --- old and new --- to get together and talk about it with you wherever you are summering this year? I can picture you in beach chairs at the water's edge chatting about friendship. If you do, send me a picture.
And for those of you who have already read Firefly Lane, here's a little treat. I've included some material that didn't make the final copy of the book. Click here to see how Tully and Kate kept in touch when they weren't together.
Here's to great reminiscing of old best friend friendships, as well as the best friends you now have…
