After a wonderful, hectic holiday season, I am now back to work again. The endless round of parties and shopping and baking and wrapping has faded away, leaving the comfortable routine of ordinary life in its wake. As I’m sure is true for many of you, January is a busy month for me, and never more so than this year. For the first time in a long time — well, for the first time ever actually — I have two books out in the same month, and that makes for a lot of writing and blogging and traveling. Mostly, it makes for a lot of excitement.
Today my New York Times bestselling novel, NIGHT ROAD will finally be available in trade paperback. If my e-mails and Facebook page are any indication, I know a lot of you — especially those of you who belong to book clubs — have been waiting for this day for quite a while. I’m thrilled that you’ll be able to get this book and talk about it with your friends. It’s a novel that raises a lot of interesting, sensitive questions — important questions — and it should prompt some lively discussions. You’ll find an extensive list of reader discussion questions in the back of the book, as well as some photographs and other fun stuff. NIGHT ROAD is also a great book for mother-daughter reading. I guarantee that it can spark an important conversation with a teen.
To get you or your book club started, here’s a short video of me discussing some of the issues and themes in the novel. When you read the book — or if you’ve already read it — please join me on my Facebook page and let me know what you thought about it. I love hearing from readers. Also, here’s a link to the Seattle Times “Best Books of 2011” list. I was honored to see NIGHT ROAD named among such stellar company.
And don’t forget that I LOVE to talk to book clubs via speakerphone. If your club is discussing NIGHT ROAD, go to this page on my website to fill out a form to tell me more about your group. Hopefully we can coordinate a chat time. I’d love to call in to your group if my schedule permits.
I have been exceptionally grateful for the outpouring of reader support this year. Your comments and conversations on facebook are great! To thank you all, I am giving away a FREE downloadable short story called “The Glass Case.” This is a limited opportunity — available only for a little longer — so I hope you’ll find the time to download it soon. Included is a sneak peek at HOME FRONT, my next novel, which will be available in hardcover on January 31st.
I’ll be sending out more information on HOME FRONT soon! I really can’t wait to hear what you all think about it. This book has become very special to me, and I am excited to share it with you.

All marriages have a breaking point. All families have wounds. All wars have a cost…
Like many couples, Michael and Jolene have to face the pressures of everyday life—children, careers, bills, chores—even as their twelve year marriage is falling apart. Then an unexpected deployment sends Jolene deep into harm’s way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls. As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a soldier she has always understood the true meaning of duty. In her letters home, she paints a rose-colored version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth. But war will change Jolene in ways that none of them could have foreseen. When tragedy strikes, Michael must face his darkest fear and fight a battle of his own–for everything that matters to his family.
At once a profoundly honest look at modern marriage and a dramatic exploration of the price of war on an ordinary American family, HOME FRONT is a story of love, loss, heroism, honor and ultimately, hope.

For eighteen years, Jude Farraday has put her children’s needs above her own, and it shows—her twins, Mia and Zach—are bright and happy teenagers. When Lexi Baill moves into their small, close knit community, no one is more welcoming than Jude. Lexi, a former foster child with a dark past, quickly becomes Mia’s best friend. Then Zach falls in love with Lexi and the three become inseparable.
Jude does everything to keep her kids on track for college and out of harm’s way. It has always been easy– until senior year of high school. Suddenly she is at a loss. Nothing feels safe anymore; every time her kids leave the house, she worries about them.
On a hot summer’s night her worst fears come true. One decision will change the course of their lives. In the blink of an eye, the Farraday family will be torn apart and Lexi will lose everything. In the years that follow, each must face the consequences of that single night and find a way to forget…or the courage to forgive.
Vivid, universal, and emotionally complex, Night Road raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness. It is a luminous, heartbreaking novel that captures both the exquisite pain of loss and the stunning power of hope. This is Kristin Hannah at her very best, telling an unforgettable story about the longing for family, the resilience of the human heart, and the courage it takes to forgive the people we love.
