Happy Veteran’s Day

Every book I write, I learn something important, but it’s rare that a book actually changes the way I think. HOME FRONT is a very special book for me in that way. In the past, I’ve tackled World War II Russia, teen drinking, DNA testing, and cancer. But researching and writing HOME FRONT, with its military theme, was a mammoth undertaking. I was a bit like Alice, falling down the rabbit hole, into a world where nothing was quite the way I imagined it. But what I saw and learned truly transformed me. I came away with a more profound and even deeper respect for our soldiers and their families, who sacrifice so much so that we all can live safely. It is the first of my own books that consistently brought me to tears. The emotions that come with the story of a deployed soldier are simply overwhelming. On this Veteran’s Day, I’d like to offer my thanks to the troops and their families, and our veterans.

As a special Veteran’s Day gift, I’m giving away a FREE downloadable short story, “The Glass Case.” It is the story of April Bannerman, a young mother of three, married to her high school sweetheart and living in the same small town in which she grew up. Although she loves her children and husband, April is plagued by the growing doubt that she has not lived up to her mother’s expectations for her— until one day when something terrible and unexpected happens, and April must face the truth about her own life and discover what really matters.

Sharing this story for free is my way of saying thank you to my readers for their support over the past year. Inside, you’ll find a very special preview of HOME FRONT, which will be published on January 31st. You can read more about HOME FRONT later in this newsletter. And for those of you who have not yet explored NIGHT ROAD, please note that that will be available in trade paperback on January 3rd; reading groups who have been reading it thus far have been sharing comments about their discussions with me. In a book group that always waits for the trade paperback? Then you may want to consider NIGHT ROAD for January!

I love to hear what you have to say about my work. I visit my Facebook page daily and read and respond to many of the comments . My writing schedule only affords me time to blog about once a month these days, but I enjoy seeing reader comments there as well. So if you close one of my books — or finish reading “The Glass Case” — think about jumping online to share your thoughts.

Take a moment on Veteran’s Day to think about our troops. I will be back to you with another newsletter in early January, so here’s wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season.

All my best,

Kristin

All marriages have a breaking point. All families have wounds. All wars have a cost…

Like many couples, Michael and Jolene have to face the pressures of everyday life—children, careers, bills, chores—even as their twelve year marriage is falling apart. Then an unexpected deployment sends Jolene deep into harm’s way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls. As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a soldier she has always understood the true meaning of duty. In her letters home, she paints a rose-colored version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth. But war will change Jolene in ways that none of them could have foreseen. When tragedy strikes, Michael must face his darkest fear and fight a battle of his own–for everything that matters to his family.

At once a profoundly honest look at modern marriage and a dramatic exploration of the price of war on an ordinary American family, HOME FRONT is a story of love, loss, heroism, honor and ultimately, hope.

For eighteen years, Jude Farraday has put her children’s needs above her own, and it shows—her twins, Mia and Zach—are bright and happy teenagers. When Lexi Baill moves into their small, close knit community, no one is more welcoming than Jude. Lexi, a former foster child with a dark past, quickly becomes Mia’s best friend. Then Zach falls in love with Lexi and the three become inseparable.

Jude does everything to keep her kids on track for college and out of harm’s way. It has always been easy– until senior year of high school. Suddenly she is at a loss. Nothing feels safe anymore; every time her kids leave the house, she worries about them.

On a hot summer’s night her worst fears come true. One decision will change the course of their lives. In the blink of an eye, the Farraday family will be torn apart and Lexi will lose everything. In the years that follow, each must face the consequences of that single night and find a way to forget…or the courage to forgive.

Vivid, universal, and emotionally complex, Night Road raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness. It is a luminous, heartbreaking novel that captures both the exquisite pain of loss and the stunning power of hope. This is Kristin Hannah at her very best, telling an unforgettable story about the longing for family, the resilience of the human heart, and the courage it takes to forgive the people we love.
